May Term and New Interns!

Hello everybody! The start of a new "May-mester" brings along two new interns at the Institute of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies. Our names are Aimee and Megan, and we are thrilled to be contributing to the stellar work of this institute.

More entries will follow this one as we have been reading and watching numerous works we cannot wait to tell you all about. For now, though, we thought we would tell you all about horse race jockey Martin Garcia. Aimee and I were watching television this weekend and caught the Preakness Stakes, the second of three major races for the Triple Crown. As soon as we saw that Garcia had won we decided to research his life and tell people more about this incredible individual.

Martin Garcia was born in Veracruz, Mexico on October 23, 1984. He came to the United States in 2003 and found a job at a delicatessen in Pleasanton, California. The deli's owner, Teri Terry, introduced him to Mark Hanna, a former jockey, who helped him get started in horse racing as a stable hand and exercise rider. Garcia galloped horses for six months before starting to ride in races at Golden Gate Fields. On August 17, 2005, Martin Garcia won his first race aboard Wild Daydreamer at the Bay Meadows Fair.

Garcia got his big break in the earlier part of 2006 by beating jockey Russell Baze for leading jockey at Golden Gate Fields as Baze had dominated that circuit and track.
He relocated to Southern California in April 2006 and made an instant showing, finishing in the top five jockeys for the Hollywood Park Racetrack meet.

On May 15, 2010 Garcia rode Lookin at Lucky in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The horse was favored to win the Kentucky Derby two weeks prior, but the horse had a difficult race and was shut out of the top five spots almost immediately leaving the gate. Bob Baffert, the owner of Lookin at Lucky, originally had jockey Garrett Gomez race the horse however switched Gomez for Garcia in hopes of ending a streak of bad races. This is Baffert’s fifth Preakness win, but his first Triple Crown event since 2002.

Last Week/ Last post!!

Hello readers!

In writing this entry I am not sure how exactly I should feel. This blog has been my baby. I created it and put a lot of myself and views of events on campus into it. Yet it is said that all good things must come to an end. I have reached the end of my four years at the University of Connecticut and this Sunday will be the culmination of four years of hard work with graduation. Throughout my experiences at UConn I have grown as a person and am grateful for all the opportunities presented. I am truly grateful to Dr. Rios and Puerto Rican Latino Studies Institute for giving me the opportunity of expressing myself through a writing internship. I will not leave you readers or this project in the hand of just anyone. I have spoken with Dr. Rios the lovely director of the institute and have chosen a responsible and skilled candidate to continue on the blog. His name is Christopher. He is a very talented person, involved in all sorts of organizations, and very responsible, while also having a lovely personality. With all these characteristics I am sure that he will include entries which are very interesting for you all.

I could not have asked for a better senior year. UConn Women’s basketball team brought home their second consecutive championship after an undefeated season which caused large celebrations on campus. There were A LOT of proud huskies within the last month of school. Along with that I experienced my last Latin fest as a BAILE member. A bittersweet night with great Latin artists Tony Vega and Andy Andy singing through the night. BAILE has been my life the last four years and was a very emotional time walking off the dance stage knowing that it would be my last performance with the group. The memories made this final year will be truly cherished. However, with all good comes bad. Unfortunately this past weekend we lost yet another husky. A young Jafar K. was merely 20 years old and left in critical condition at the start of spring weekend due to a fight. Although this situation could have occurred any weekend, the non school sponsored event specifically during spring weekend can easily been seen as having an effect in the events leading up to the situation. Although Jafar is no longer with us he will always be in our prayers as a fallen husky with Jasper, Sagar, and so many others. They say the good die young and with the passing of so many wonderful people in my college career I must remind myself and all readers that life is blessing. One must seize the day and take advantage of the time we have. With that said I wish you all the best on your finals and nothing but success in any future endeavors. I look forward to reading and seeing many of your names as huskies in successful terms. Always keep in mind that life is to be enjoyed and understand that everyday given to us is a blessing to be appreciated.
